Of the gratitude quilt instructions, I finally got started on my guild challenge quilt. Last spring we had a guest speaker who did a trunk show of quilts made by her group using this procedure, and we decided to give it a try. Each member brought in uncut yardage of a batik fabric. For example, I brought in a yard, some brought 2 yards, etc. At our meeting how much everyone contributed was recorded, then the fabric was cut into 10" squares. Each yard produces about 12 of these squares, plus some Chinese Coins. The squares were then given to each participant according to how much they had given, so I received 12 squares back.
In trunk show everyone had used the method from Stack a New Deck. Our guild recognizes that a number of our members wouldn't participate if mae that specific. Our challenge was simply to make a top using those squares. We are allowed to use any amount of those fabrics and we may add to them. Some are doing more traditional blocks, some are doing the Sack a New Deck types.
This is what I did. It is from the pattern (and ruler) Boondoggle. I didn't follow the instructions exactly on all the blocks. I wanted to use as much of each as I had, so after doing it using their measurements, I put together some new measurements (on the striped blocks) to make the fabric go further. I also added background and more batiks for the solid diamonds. I'm not totally thrilled, I might have done better to use a Stack a New Deck pattern, but I do like it.
I also got hubby to help me put the center into Photoshop to play with finishing possiblities. The second two are the photoshop mock ups to give an idea of two choices I'm considering. I'm debating between just putting a border of the background and calling it done, or bordering with batiks.

I rather like this pattern that you made. The diamond shapes are refreashing, as so much in quilts tends to be squares and rectangles I think. Personally I think the batik border adds a little more sparkle, but neither would be "wrong". :-)

I vote for the batik border. I think it makes the quilt "sing". The brown muddies the batiks and they don't look as flashy.
I wouldn't know a Boondoogle from a hole in the ground, LOL and can only guess just what the stack the deck is (like stack and slash, I think) BUT I do like what you did with your challenge squares.
I love the batik border best. This will be a sparkelig quilt. What on earth is a boondoggle ruler? I got a lot of rulers I have bought but never used.
I really have a strong preference for the scrappy border & then maybe the burgundy solid border...
I really like the middle pictures with the large rectangles of fabric for the borders. I think it finishes off the quilt beautifully.
border with batiks it adds to the quilt. the background as a border is lost.!! love this!

I agree with the others . THe middle with the batik borders is the best option. I love the Stack a New Deck method. Very fast and no danger of accidentally getting two pieces the same touching.

Batiks. Brighter. I have that ruler, from PIQF last year, and I had a lot of fun stitching scraps together and then cutting out the diamonds from them.
I really like this pattern and the fabrics you chose. The middle one with the scrappy border is my favorite.
i am also voting for the scrappy border. The quilt is coming along nicely.
By the way, your Neapolitan (Gratitude) quilt is just beautiful. I love the colors you have used for this quilt.
Ohh, the batiks go so great in that design.
The problem my guild has with swaps like that is we have too many people who don't follow the rules - women who think that 100% cotton UPHOLSTERY weight fabric is ok to bring to swap, or people who think if they bring the right size FQ fall themed fabric, that nobody will care if it's mostly polyester.
