A poll about fabrics

Thanks for all the comments on Lincoln's Platform. Once that one was finished being pieced, I turned my attention to the Turning Twenty that was already started on the frame and got that finished. Yesterday I trimmed away the excess backing/batting and made the binding. I hope that I will get a chance to machine sew the binding on after work today so that I will have a handwork project to do while watching television. Its getting exciting to be that close to finish-makes me want to get to it!

A POLL: I've been looking through my fabrics trying to see what's there, it makes me wonder if I have a particular style or color that I favor. I have concluded that so many appeal to me that I am just a kid turned loose in a candy store- have to try a little of everything. Sometimes the faded, old-looking romantics appeal, sometimes the batiks or really brights, sometimes homespuns. Various people have mentioned having favorites, Andrea says she loves butterflies, Karen (Sewprimitive) favors Jo Morton fabrics. So, here is the poll on the fabrics you choose to use:

1. What is your favorite color to use in your quilts?
2. Do you have a favorite style, ie. depression repros, 1800 repros, geometrics, florals, plaids, batiks, marbled, etc.?
3. Do you have a favorite line of fabrics, ie. Kaffee Fasset, one of Moda's lines, Jo Morton, etc.?
4. Do you tend to buy a particular subject , ie. butterflies, strawberries, cats?
5. Did I miss a category here?????

I love em all! I probably have more blue for some reason but right now I am collecting green fat quarters to make a quilt in the future. My favorite line of fabric is anything that's on sale. Lol.

I"m drawn to any "loud" bright and fun fabric, that isn't a novelty print. When I walk into a quilt shop I can simply look at the fabric wall from across the room and pick out the 2 or 3 bolts that really stand out from all the others, and those will be what I want to take home....

Fun poll! I have several favorites

1. Fall colors; red, white and blue scheme; primitive, folk art colors, soft faded pastels.
2. Homespuns and folk art style prints, reproductions from every era, and soft, faded romantic florals.
3. Modas absolutely, plus Marcus Brothers and Baum reproductions.
4. I don't ever buy by subject. :-)
5. Can't think of one!

It's so funny. When I started quilting I thought I would stay away from yellow and orange because I don't like those colors very much. But now, I've learned how much punch those colors can add to a quilt. And I've even been drawn to making a mainly orange and lime green quilt for a little girl in France, and it turned out great...so, I guess the answer is, my color tastes change all the time.

And of course, the fabric manufacturers keep coming up with luscious new prints, so what's a girl to do but expand her horizons!

Still, when I look at my stash (which I can't do right now...it's still on the boat to Australia...boo-hoo!) I find I have more blues and purples than any other color, and a surprising amount of black/grey/brown/umber.

1. Green, red and gold.
2. Love them all.
3. Buy them all, but probably more Moda than the others.
4. Attracted to geometrics - stripes, polka dots, swirls, etc. Cats or birds or such end up seldom being used.
5. Another question to ask might be, "Do you shop for fabric at a Quilt Shop or a national chain?"

Almost my entire "stash" is Joanne's calicos - bought on sale with 50% off coupons over a period of a few years... about 6 years ago! I am still using it up!!! I have bought a few geometrics to make a specific quilt, Thimbleberries for another quilt and odds and ends - what is not to love about fat quarters! Maybe once I use up this stash I will be more picky next time around, but this fabric has served me well so far and I have made many beautiful quilts!

Cheers!

Evelyn

Great poll, but I need to think about my answers. I'll get back to when I have them ready.

Poll responses
1. I love them all but I do have a thing for red/white/blue quilts.
2. I love jewel tones best but like most all the others. Just not the repros (1800s or 1930s) nearly as well as most other types.
3. Nope as long as it feels good and isn't too flimsy OR too thick.
4. Cats, cats, and more cats. LOL!
5. Not that I can think of.

I am with Nancy. Most of my fabric is Red, White and Blue. I lean toward the darker colors and have to work at having lights.

I usally buy what speaks to me when I am in the store although I am learning to watch for the silent fabrics that add depth to the quilt.

1. What is your favorite color to use in your quilts?

Greens and purples

2. Do you have a favorite style, ie. depression repros, 1800 repros, geometrics, florals, plaids, batiks, marbled, etc.?

Handdyes? I am hoping to slowly switch to all my handdyed fabric. It's cheaper in the long run. :)

3. Do you have a favorite line of fabrics, ie. Kaffee Fasset, one of Moda's lines, Jo Morton, etc.?

Favorite? No, but I like Thimbleberries and 30s... but won't buy them.

4. Do you tend to buy a particular subject , ie. butterflies, strawberries, cats?

Not really. I have certain themed fabric, but not buying any specific one.

I realized when I sorted my stash by color that my blue fabric dominates.

Scrappy quilts are my favorite and when I'm using all colors I like to use a heavier dose of red in relationship to the other colors - I think it helps the quilt pop.

I don't have a preference for a particular fabric line.

I *collect* fat quarter bundles.

I'm not a good one to ask--I like about anything really and use all sorts of colors since I make kid quilts. They dont have to live at my house so it doesn't matter, LOL.

Me personally--30's repros but I love brights too, cat fabrics I have a collection but I also have 1800 era repros as well.

2. Do you have a favorite style, ie. depression repros, 1800 repros, geometrics, florals, plaids, batiks, marbled, etc.? I like florals, marbled, tone on tone sort of things. But that doesn't mean I don't like other styles either.

3. Do you have a favorite line of fabrics, ie. Kaffee Fasset, one of Moda's lines, Jo Morton, etc.?
Nope don't have any favorite lines

4. Do you tend to buy a particular subject , ie. butterflies, strawberries, cats?
I'd buy butterflies a lot if I had anything planned for them. Butterflies are my favorite :)

5. Did I miss a category here?????
Maybe favorite pattern? I really like the log cabin patterns

I have a tendency to like EVERYTHING however I find that I shy away from batiks. I enjoy working with 30's, Civil War Repros, Brights, folk art colors, primitive colors, etc. I absolutely love most Moda fabric lines although I've been known to buy lots of others. So, my answer is ALL OF THE ABOVE. ;-)

I'm so fickle! There were times over the past five years that I could have said with certainty what my favorites were. Now that I'm experimenting a bit more, I like almost everything.

Dots are absolutely my most favorite thing to collect. That has remained a constant. Wonder if it has anything to do with that dotted swiss my mom loved to dress me in as a kid? LOL

Moda still remains my favorite manufacturer, although not the only thing I buy any more.

Robyn Pandolph was once my favorite designer, but I feel since she left Moda that her stuff is only mediocre. Gasp! I can't believe I said that!

Dark blue is still my favorite color - I really avoid using it all the time. That would make for a dull quilt collection, wouldn't it?

I think I like the "folk art" look the best. Those are the quilts that tug at my heart strings. I like Civil War stuff, too. I guess that's I've moved made bright quilts lately! LOL

See? I told you I was fickle!

1. I am big on red, blue, and other bright colors.
2. No real favorite style but I do like a lot of modern stuff.
3. No real favorite line, I just buy what I like and what I want to use. I am really big on texture though and if I don't like how it feels I won't buy it no matter how much I love the print.
4. I will always buy dogs, cherries, doves, and some other things that mean things to me.
5. Can't think of anything else.
